AUSTIN -- All good things must come to an end as F1 fans begin to head back home. With the race in the books many fans are heading out of town, making for a busy day at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.
The largest crowds so far came between 4 and 8 a.m. Monday. That's when close to 7,700 people boarded flights out of town. That's about about 2,200 more people than on a normal day.
Despite that airport staffers say the longest wait time was under 30 minutes.
The increased number of passengers was also visible beyond the gates, as was an increased number of live music performances and F1 memorabilia for sale.
Every passenger KVUE crews spoke with said they really enjoyed the entire experience in Austin.
We were told to probably get here earlier, and we got our rental car taken care of and everything, and they directed us to a faster line and security. Got through, everything's been fine, said Sheryl Cleghorn from Albuquerque, New Mexico.
We watched the news this morning, and they said it was gonna be a mad house, so we came much earlier, and my flight's not for three hours, so we'll enjoy your beautiful airport, said Jeff Grant from Orlando, Florida.
The day after the U.S. Grand Prix in 2012 was a record breaker at ABIA. It's the day when 21,800 people departed on flights -- the highest number ever in one day.
Departure totals are expected in the new few days.
